The Critical Question: How Do You Tell The Difference Between Water And Coolant?

1. Check the Location

• AC Condensate: Near the passenger side firewall (the metal wall between the engine and the cabin). That’s where the evaporator drain tube lives.

2. The Paper Towel Test (Do this one)

• Water: Dab it with a white paper towel. It soaks in clean and clear. No stain.

• Water: No smell. Zero. Zilch.
• Coolant: Smells sweet. Like syrup or candy. That sweet smell is the chemical ethylene glycol, and it is not a drink.

4. The Feel Test

• Water: Rub it between your fingers. It evaporates quickly. No residue.
• Coolant: Feels slippery or oily. It leaves a slick film on your skin.

What About Normal Stuff That Isn’t AC?
